Are We Boiling Frogs?
By: Rosemary Smith, Managing Director Getting Better Foundation
Wikipedia says: “The boiling frog is a fable describing a frog being slowly boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.”
Like boiling frogs losing their lives,
Something is being stolen from us that many are not aware of losing.
Many are being manipulated by the less credible of media companies
Who deliver biased or false news.
This is polarizing communities by causing confirmation biases.
Attracting and holding our attention with erroneous information
That jaundices our view of the world.
Mis- and Dis-Information that drives up fear.
Unnecessary fear that erodes Trust in our fellow citizens.
And Trust is the foundation of successful societies.
We cannot allow this to be stolen.
By understanding how to properly consume media, or “media literacy”,
We can protect ourselves and our loved ones from this trend
And potentially save our mental health in the process.
In Germany, in the early 30’s,
Many knew something was happening,
Few truly understood what was happening,
Until it was too late.
By the time the citizenry understood the mis-direction,
they could lose their lives opposing it.
We know the rest of that story.
How do we know?
Credible journalism is the bedrock of democracy.
Media literacy is the key to its success.
Let’s wake up, before the water’s too hot.
